Casino Saturation

At the junction of Interstate 35 and State Highway 9 near Norman, steel girders underscore a coming behemoth that can swallow a Wal-Mart Supercenter. At 219,000 square feet, the Chickasaw Nation's Riverwind casino will be Oklahoma's largest. A hundred miles south, the same tribe is building a golf course and soon will start construction on an all-suites hotel to convert the WinStar Casino into a destination resort. On Interstate 40 east of Oklahoma City, gamblers play in a tent-like building hastily erected by the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Next to it, construction continues on a hotel and casino complex. And in Cotton County, the Kiowa Nation recently finished dirt work for a 1,000-game casino near Interstate 44 at the Texas border. The Comanche Nation has a slightly bigger one 1½ miles away. The construction boom raises a question: Is Oklahoma reaching its casino saturation point? Experts say no.

"I've never seen saturation throughout an entire state," said Saul Leonard, a California-based gambling consultant with 40 years in the business. He said saturation is much more common within a confined area, such as Las Vegas or, closer to home, the Shreveport/Bossier City, La., market. "But I just can't see anyone making a categorical statement about saturation in a state the size of Oklahoma," Leonard said. "Obviously, you're far from it."
