Clark County to Vote on Gambling

Clark County resident will take a vote whether it will allow riverboat casino. A petition that is calling for a referendum was submitted to the county office last August 1.

According to the chief deputy clerk, Shirley Bell, the petition organizers had claimed to possess eight hundred eighteen signatures, more than what is required.

Bell, said that only four hundred sixty three votes are needed for the referendum to proceed.

The signatures are to be validated and if found true and correct; this will be the first time that the county will vote again about the riverboat casino after rejecting it last in 1993 and 1995.

There are no casino licenses that are currently available in Indiana and the move to let the residents decide has been the plan for two years.

John Perkins, Jeffersonville City Council Democratic member, is one of the leading supporters in the referendum, but he had dropped his campaign and according to him he did not know that a separate move exists.

The petitioners include well known Republicans like Regina Overton, the former mayor of New Albany, that now resides in Jeffersonville.

Other petitioners are chairman of the county's Republican Party Chairman Glenn Murphy and councilmen Ed Zastawny and Ron Grooms.
